4 Ply / Fingering / Sock / 3 Ply / Fine
This is an ideal weight for socks, fair isle, hats, shawls, scarves, gloves and baby wear. Finer than DK requiring more meterage per garment. Half the thickness of DK yarn. Uses 2 – 3.5 mm needles with 24 – 32 stitches per 10 cm
Can be used doubled to create a similar weight to DK. Please check by making a tension square before any project.
DK / 8 Ply / Light Worsted
A useful weight for all items such as not so thin socks, children’s jumpers and hats, adult sweaters, beanies, gloves, not so fine shawls, scarves and also if you’re new to colour work knitting. Usually uses 3.75 – 4.5 mm needle with 20 -22 stitches per 10 cm
10 Ply / Aran weight
Well known for Aran fishermen’s jumpers this weight of yarn is quick to knit up into jumpers, hats, scarves etc Also known as Medium, worsted or Afghan yarn.
Use 4.5 – 5.5 mm needles
18 sts X 24-28 rows per 4″/10cm
14 Ply / Chunky /Bulky
Soft squishy and fast to knit
Uses 5 – 8 mm needles with 14 – 16 sts per 10 cm
Naturals
These yarns are all dyed with natural dyes and mordants made by me. Mordants are required to help the colour be more permanent.
